Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon Kuldeep Stohr has been suspended from Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge after an external review raised serious concerns about the standard of care provided in nine complex hip surgery cases.
Cambridge University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust has since launched a full investigation. Approximately 800 cases are now being re-examined, including at least a hundred emergency trauma procedures.
The review, prompted by concerns raised by colleagues, found issues relating to Ms. Stohr’s surgical judgment and technique.
Ms. Stohr, responding to the suspension, commented: “I always strive to provide the highest standards of care to all my patients. I am cooperating fully with the trust investigation, and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
The Department of Health described the situation as “incredibly concerning.” The trust has set up a dedicated freephone helpline to support the 74 families who have already come forward.
For families impacted by this news, it can be incredibly distressing. Being notified that a medical professional or hospital involved in your or your child’s care is under investigation may raise questions about what to do next.
